To the One.....

To the one who ate what was put in front of him
And played solitaire for hours at Grandmas house
Wondering if fathers were a painted figment
Imagination runs rampant with the need for touch

To the one who hop scotched delicately
Drawing pictures of hearts and families unbroken
Finding the path with small hands and no compass
Navigating shark infested waters with floaties and a stick

To the one who spat in conventions mouth
Writing rulebooks inked in common sense and not dogma
Walking lines that broke left to lifes bounties
Using the muddy shoes to plant grapes for wine

Finding self is a task best left to the fates, they'll ring you
Flexing muscles of the heart and soul intuitively
Provides a verdict that rings with freedom and light
Blissfully aware that neither place or time are the hammer's blow

  2. This is just perfect, Corey. Each stanza held me in its palm as each line whispered its truth and the resolution laid me down again.
Finding self is a task best left to the fates.... Those are words to carry with me through the day.

  3. I think there is too much emphasis on finding "self" Just when you think you have live spins you into change...Love it as always Corey

  5. Love the "no nonsense, I'm getting on with business" tone in this poem. Especially love the wry humour in the idea of fates ringing.

  6. Fine write. For better or worse, a father is a sort of true north, and without one the compass is akilter. Living in a spinning map requires getting off the time-space grid, somehow. This poem is getting there.

  9. Sometimes one is bogged down in wanting to be at one's best in meeting aspirations of others. It may lead one astray without reasons! Nicely Corey!

  10. Not an easy road to travel with no father figure to lead .... I know. Quite an impact you've made, Corey. I will be remembering my father today, losing him as a teen changed everything.

  11. "Finding self is a task best left to the fates, they'll ring you..." --like a bell, buddy, like a bell. This is good good stuff--primo, as we used to say long ago in a galaxy far away--the first stanza sets such a way-back tone, subtle but full of tastes...it's hard for me to leave it for my next loves, the following stanzas...did I say this was good stuff?
